Collins Italian-English App Reviews

Fantastic Italian dictionary

The verb conjugation feature is very useful. I also like that it gives examples of a word in phrases. This is my favourite Italian dictionary that Ive bought so far on the app store!

Best dictionary/conjugator

With several updates under its belt it puts Oxford to shame. Would get 5 stars if you could save and organize words (history is nice, but doesnt go far enough). Hey, icon could use a reworking, too (psssss—its really not good!)... Otherwise, good job, guys!

The Best

This is definitely the best translation app. Its so quick, extremely powerful, and easy to use. In regards to the current version I would say positively that it is really easy to use and navigate, really intuitive. I think the icon is fine by the way! The only suggestions I have at this time would be to change the animation of "Italian-English" that occurs when u press the switch button to the simpler style from a few versions ago. Also, just saw that Diotec has a translation app the included flash cards. It would be very nice to see that integrated in this app so that all the power of the app would be linked with the cards. I have this app because I am speaking and learning Italian and I am always looking for an easy way to do flashcards but cant find it. Thanks for everything!

Simply the BEST!

The conjugation feature puts it over the top. This is my fourth it/eng dictionary (the 3previous were for my Palm Pilot)and it certainly is the best.

The most useful language app for the iPhone

Ive been using a number of iPhone apps to help me learn Italian. By far the most useful and effective is Collins Pro. The dictionary is quite large: Ive only been unable to find one or two obscure words since Ive been using it. The at-a-glance conjugation tables are fantastic. And when I was learning numbers, the quick number pad was a brilliant help. The best thing about Collins Pro, though, is the huge number of usage examples listed for most words. Almost every time I use it, I learn a lot more than I set out to learn. And to top it off is the ability to tap a word on a definition page and be taken to its definition or conjugation--and come right back with the browser-like "back" button. I use this app every day. Its worth more than I paid for it.

Ok

This app is pretty good but there are still a couple problems. 1) You should be able to type in an English word into the conjugation search bar and be able to get the Italian infinitive. This should also go the other way for Italian to English. ex. To go - andare To be - essere To clean - pulire 2) When you conjugate a verb in either language and want to change the tense you should be able to see the name of the tense in both languages. ex. Present (the Italian word for present) Past (the Italian word for past) Past perfect (the Italian words for past perfect) 3) This does not truly matter, but I would like to be able to use this app sideways on my iPod. 4) The price is pretty high, but it is a pretty good app. If you did decide to lower it I would not lower it much. Maybe to $20 or so (I would not go any lower than that), but this would not affect me since I have already bought the app and do not plan on deleting it. This was only an idea for getting more customers.

Love this! Needs retina display upgrade!

This is the best dictionary on the market, hands down. It easily deserves five stars. My single qualm is that it hasnt been updated for the retina display. Is an update coming soon? Thanks!

Great dictionary and conjugates verbs too!

Ive completed 2 years of university Italian courses and can speak and understand it at an elementary level. I found the paper back Collins Italian dictionary and 501 Italian Verbs (Luciani) indispensable. The ability to search for the word in the dictionary portion of the app, then tap on the word to see a pop up that lets you choose between dictionary, tenses, and google, is pretty slick. Some may think it adds an extra step, but I like it. If I had one complaint its that the app doesnt retain the current word you search for when switching between dictionary and tenses. For example, you search for andare in the dictionary portion, then you check the conjugation of the word and while youre in the tenses section, you search for another verb. Now while looking at the new verb you decide to switch back to dictionary to check for meaning, but youll find the previously looked for word (andare). It would be nice if they included a list of recently searched words to this, but overall, the functionality and quality is pretty darn good. And a heck of a lot easier than carrying two books.

Great software

Really well made highly recommended. Has everything: IPA, conjugations, numbers, grammar, however it does not have ETYMOLOGY as advertised. In fact none of the Ultralingua dictionaries have this (except English). It would be very helpful to language learners to have this information availble as it would help understand where words come from and make it easier to remember. E.g. bere (Latin Bevere) thats why its bevo bevi beve bevendo etc or fare (L facere) same thing

Excellent and useful app

A great dictionary and verb conjugator with lots of features. I recommend it highly. I would have rated it 5 stars if it werent for one annoying feature. You must go through the step of deleting the previously searched word before entering the next. If it had been automatically highlighted upon return this extra deletion step would not be necessary. This would facilitate and speed up multiple sequential searches. This is the way they do it on their online sites. I am hoping they will incorporate this feature in their next update.

Great app! Only one suggestion...

I love this app! It is extremely comprehensive, easy to navigate, and best of all -- doesnt require a wifi connection! The only suggestion I have is to incorporate audio so that we can hear the words pronounced by a native speaker. I know Collins has another app with this function, but it would be great to have it incorporated in a single app so that you dont have to switch between the two. I would gladly pay more for such an in-app upgrade! Thank you!

Italian Stallion

A bit pricey but its loaded with all kinds of goodies. Does the usual definitions but is packed with slang and usage terms. For example, the word "fare" means to make/to stay in Italian. Well, wouldnt you know, "to go shopping" makes use of this verb? Its just the way they say things over there, lol, and this app pretty much captured that essence. However, there is no audio option, so we cant HEAR the word by a native speaker. Thus you only get four stars.

Got my moneys worth

I am an advanced beginner Italian student student who just spent a couple of months in Italy and used this app every day. I used the dictionary and verb conjugation functions but didnt see any utility for the numbers section. I would have prefer to see a quicky grammar chart or maybe a liitle almanac in its place. I agree that audio would have been great. But as long as you know what syllable is accented, Italian pronunciation is pretty straight forward.

Mistakes and support

The conjugation for "succedere" is incorrect - using avere as auxiliary instead of essere. I dont bother to contact the developer since Collins and Ultralingua gave me the run-around last time I reported an error: Quote Collins: "We do not produce iPhone applications in house, rather we license them to third party developers. We would recommend contacting the developer directly. The information on the developer can be found on the product page on iTunes, under the pricing details. Kind regards Collins Language Dept" Quote Ultralingua: " Unfortunately, the Collins dictionaries arent as responsive because the data is managed by the publisher HarperCollins and is licensed by Ultralingua. Well be sure to inform HarperCollins of your finding, although a fix will likely not be forthcoming very soon."

Hate

Worst mistake- the most expensive app I have ever downloaded and it doesnt translate a simple phrase!!! I have to look up every single word?? Not happy!

A Good reason to own an iPhone!

This is a great app and works very well. I love the interactivity. It beats carrying around a dictionary and verb conjugator book.

Collins Italian English Dictionary

I use this when Im watching Italian TV, and there are many common words missing. Furthermore, about every ten entries, it crashes. Also wish it had audio as there are many times, when phonetic component is not sufficient. Then, I must resort to free app that works like a charm. However, much better, if it were all in one spot. However, shortcomings aside, it trumps using a cumbersome hardcover version. The verb conjugations also eliminates the need for a dedicated verb book. Make improvements and Ill be in heaven.

Great app!

It was great before, but the update is even better. Especially the combined conjugation/dictionary search.

Fine

Why its called ultralingua instead of Collins?!? Ultralingua was 15$ collins 25$. This is Collins why on my iphone its named Ultralinua? :S It works fine anyway

Better before

Since the "upgrade" this app is more difficult to use, requiring more "strokes" to find/get what you want. Also, the fancy lettering is distracting. They have removed the names of the tenses in the language being used, replacing them with the English equivalents, which is NOT helpful when the tense names are different than English. Looks like they tried to,make it look more streamlined, but all they did was make it fancy and harder to us. Please remember the KISS principle!
